The Coton de Tulear is a rare and ancient breed that comes from the island of Madagascar. It is said the Coton was a companion to the sailors that traveled the coast of Africa. It is speculated that one of the ships capsized and the surviving dogs swam to shore and bred with the native dogs of the island creating the beautiful and intelligent breed we know as the Coton de Tulear.
Madagascars royal family became so enamored with the little white dog that they enacted laws that prohibited anyone other than royalty to own them and thereafter they became known as the "Royal Dog of Madagascar".
Today the Coton de Tulear is rare in its homeland but is growing in popularity in the United States and Europe.
